MBA Applicant questions - Low undergraduate GPA and Challenging admissions essays

1. I'm planning on applying for B-school next year. I've already started preparing for GMAT and TOEFL tests.  However, I'm a little concerned about my GPA. My GPA is around 2.5 and most top schools ask for a GPA of 3.0 and up.  Is there any way of raising my GPA, in order to meet admissions standards?

My MBA Admit:
Although there is no way to go back to college and raise your GPA,you can certainly take steps to demonstrate to AdCom that you have recognized a weakness in your application, and are working actively to resolve it.

Look at your transcript again. See if you can find a pattern to the courses that brought your GPA down - were they quantitative or qualitative? Common courses I see my clients struggling with when they apply for MBA are Accounting and Calculus/Statistics. University of Chicago (of which I am an alum), even offers courses for the 4 weeks before the start of MBA to pump up its new students.

Depending on what you find in your transcript analysis, look around for community colleges or online universities that offer those courses for a low cost. You don't even have to finish the courses by the time you apply.  However, mentioning in your application that you have taken the initiative to remedy a weakness and better prepare yourself for entering MBA the following year will go a long way towards demonstrating your initiative in strengthening your application.

2. I am finding trouble in writing good essays.  I have started improving my vocabulary but what I found trouble is in using these words at the right location. Please help me out?

My MBA Admit:

Having edited many MBA Admissions essays, my advice is this.  MBA essays are not as much about demonstrating an extensive vocabulary(although it helps!) as they are about demonstrating clarity in your ideas.  For instance, can you tell the Admissions Committee, in 2 sentences or less, on why you would like to attend business school?

An useful format to use in this question - What have I done in the past?, Where do I want to go?, and Why an MBA, specifically from your program, will help me get there?

Good essays are a matter of opinion. What is more important is that they clearly speak of your sincere desire to attend, and supplement it with strong reasons for wanting to do so.  If you are referring to grammar issues, I would be happy to recommend additional reference books.
